Industry Observations
Bebo Bump, SocialThing and Aggregation of Social content
Interesting article from ArsTechnica reminds me of some changes that are in the air with the Social Networking industry. The white label and offerings have soaked up most of the independent social networks while the players in the mega-size sites is still the top three or five sites we hear about all the time. Ars points out that new features in Bebo seem to be more of a social aggregation of content drawn from other services instead of trying to unseat the core competency of the monolithic sites. It seems there's still room for specialized social networks and we've seen sites dedicated to age groups and privacy issues like Bebo but it is clear their value path is evolving and only time will tell if Bebo is onto something, or if they are missing the mark. After all, simplicity of a service indicates focused effort as apposed to cluttered or complicated offerings which are an indication of distracted effort. In the end, it is the users who will determine if these new changes are going to be a success or a dud. |
